  • Look Inside

We started extracapsular cataract extraction (ECCE) with posterior chamber lens (PCL) im-plantation in 1984. Initially, surgery was performed by a few senior surgeons on cases with established indication. Later, they trained junior surgeons to master the new procedure. Successful ECCE withPCL implantation was performed in 100 eyes in the first 102 attempted cases.

Final corrected visual acuity ranged from 20/20 to 20/200. Visual acuity of 20/40 or more was obtained in 94 eyes. We met no severe complica-tions such as endophthalmitis, corneal endothelial damage or retinal detachment.

In order to achieve success in PCL implantation by junior surgeons, it is imperative to select indicat-ed cases and to be skillful in ECCE procedure.
