  • Look Inside

We designed a new lacrimal punctum plug as a tool to treat dry eye conditions. It has a water content of 78% and is a hydrogel, a co-polymer of polyvinylpyloridone and polymethylmethacrylate. It is produced by Toray Industries, Inc. As a striking feature, the plug shrinks to one-third of its original volume when dried. It rehy-drates to the original volume when wet. Insertion of the plug is easy as it is done while it is done in its dry, shrunken state. The plug is 2.5 mm long when wet. The diameter is either 1.5 mm (large) or 1.0 mm (small).

We treated 38 eyes in 28 cases with hypolacrimation including Sjoegren's and Stevens-Johnson syndromes by inserting this plug into the lacrimal punctum for longer periods. The effects were evaluated by staining with rose bengal and fluorescein, phenol red tear measuring test, photokeratoscopy and visual acuity. The clinical results were judged as excellent in the overwhelming majority of cases. The lacrimal punctum plug appeared to be one of the most effective treat-ments for dry eye.
