Twenty-nine patients with Sjögren's syndrome were tested as to beta-2-microglobulin content in the tear fluid. The beta-2-microglobulin level was 10.61±3.90 mg/l in normal human tears and 18.99±7.73 mg/ l in Sjögren's syndrome. The difference was signifi-cant (p<0.05).
This finding indicates that the measurement of beta-2-microglobulin in the tear fluid can be of value in the diagnosis of Sjögren's syndrome. The elevated beta-2 -microglobulin level in the tear fluid may be due to lymphoid infiltration in the lacrimal glands.
