Photoelectrically recorded horizontal minor eye movement was studied in 10 cases with typical Minamata disease (MD) and in 10 normal subjects matched for age. A fixation target, 8 by 15 mm in size, was placed 2 meters before the test subjects. The eye movement was recorded with the target illumination at 0, 0.3, 0.6, 1.2 log unit and the dark.

All patients with MD showed square wave jerks (SWJ) in all conditions of illumination, while 4 out of 10 normal subjects showed SWJ in the dark only. One subject showed SWJ at 1.2 log unit of illumination. The duration was significantly pro-longed in MD than in controls.
