Dipivalyl epinephrine (0.1%) was administered in the cul-de-sac of rabbit eyes. Control study was performed with the eye drops in which DPE was removed. Six hours after the instillation of DPE, the endothelial cells were swollen and vacuoles were seen under light and electron microscope. After DPE eye drops were instilled twice a day for seven days, Descemet's membrane-like material was observed in the vacuoles and intercellular spaces.
The findings indicate that dipivalyl epinephrine can induce damages in the corneal endothelial cells when instilled topically.
