A quantitative evaluation of retro-illumination photographs of cataractous lens opacities was con-ducted with a Zeiss image analyzer, Micro Video-mat 2. This method enables, with relative ease, to classify opacities into five to eight different shades, to observe their forms in each shade, and to measure their area. It was confirmed that the measurements by this method were reliable and that they adequately represented lens opacities at every stage quantitatively in density as well as in area. At present, retro-illumination photography poses some problems in terms of reliability.
