  • Look Inside

Number of ophthalmologists per population in Japan is among the highest in the world, being one ophthalmologists for twenty-thousand. The need and demand for ophthalmic service in Japan seem to be met by the existing manpower and facilities, guessing from the statistics of me-dical insurance and by population survey. The incidence of congenital abnormalities of the eye seems to have decreased to one third during the past ten years, in parallel with the drop in infant mortality. Around fourty-thousand new cataract cases for surgery each year are estimated, and will increase by the sharp increase in elderly pop-ulation.
