An unsual form of capsular cataract has been observed in an increasing frequncy in schizo-phrenic patient under long-term treatment with butyrophenol derivatives. Once after the cata-ract has started, it has a tendency to aggra-vate rapidly so that the vision is severely affected within a short period.
Eight eyes in seven patients with this type of cataract have been operated. Histological studies have shown that the lens opacity is chiefly due to degenerative process in the cor-tical region. Large, round "balloon cells" were located in the subepithelial layer in the equator.
