We developed a silicone ball to be used as scleral implant in retinal detachment surgery. The silicone ball is available either as a spherical ball or a hemispherical one. The silicone material is inert and does not absorb water. It is thus regarded to be infection-free.

We used this silicone ball in retinal detachment surgery in 29 eyes with large retinal tear of more than 2 disc diameters and in 4 eyes with macular hole. Closure of retinal tears and clinical cure re-sulted in 25 eyes with retinal tears and 3 eyes with macular hole.

The spherical or hemispherical silicone ball thus appeared to be of particular use in the surgical treatment of retinal detachment with large tears. It is also suitable for macular hole. In our present series, the implant was fixed to the posterior sclera by means of a methylmetacrylate adhesive.
