  • Abstract
  • Look Inside

After the danger of an atomosphare rich in oxygen had been realized, the retinopathy of prematurity (retrolental fibroplasia) has almost disappeared except for an occasional occurrence. However, Avery et al. (1960) showed a higher mortality in premature infants cared for from 1954 to 1958 when oxygen was curtailed com-pared to the period of 1944 to 1948 when oxygen was used liberally. In recent years pediatricians has come to realize the high mortality from respiratory distress and infants with respiratory distress receive high concentration of oxygen for several days after birth.
