  • Look Inside

In a town of Tokushima Prefecture, 102 cases suffered from an acute catarrhal con-junctivitis during the first 4 months in 1966. Most of the patients were schoolchildren. Gram-positive diplococci were demonstrated in the conjunctival smears in all of the cases. By bacteriological examinations, the causative agent was identified as pneumococcus, which was susceptible to tetracycline, streptomycin, chloramphenicol, penicillin, erythromycin, neo-mycin and sulfonamide, but resistant against kanamycin and colistin. Pneumococcal conjun-ctivitis in such a large scale of epidemics has never been reported in Japan.
