Abstract. Purpose:To report nocturnal heart rate in patients with nonproliferative or proliferative diabetic retinopathy. Cases and Method:This study was made on 219 hospitalized patients. The series comprised 126 males and 93 females. All had type Ⅱ diabetes mellitus. Nonproliferative retinopathy was present in 68 cases and proliferative in 151. The age averaged 66 years in the former group and 60 in the latter. Systemic hypertension was present in 56% and 67% respectively. Heart beat was measured during rest in the night and during sleep using a pulse oxymeter. Results:Heart rate during rest in the night and during sleep was significantly higher in patients with proliferative than nonproliferative retinopathy. Young age and high heart rate during sleep were identified as factors related to above findings. Conclusion:High heart rate in diabetic persons may be a predictor of proliferative diabetic retinopathy.
