Abstract. Purpose:To report a case of cytomegalovirus retinitis that developed after intravitreal injection of triamcinolone acetonide. Case:A 75-year-old male presented with impaired vision in the right eye since 6 months before. He had a history of herpes zoster 8 years before. Findings:Corrected visual acuity was 0.2 right and 1.0 left. The right eye showed findings of branch retinal vein occlusion with macular edema. He received intravitreal injection of triamcinolone. Pseudohypopyon developed 2 days later and was treated by irrigation of vitreous and anterior chamber. The right eye developed anterior uveitis 3 months later. Cytomegalovirus was cultured from the vitreous leading to the diagnosis of cytomegalovirus retinitis. He has been doing well for 5 years until present with the final visual acuity of 0.7. Conclusion:This case illustrates that cytomegalovirus retinitis may develop in an immunocompetent person following inravitreal injection of triamcinolone acetonide.
