Abstract. Purpose:To report the long-term clinical course of central retinal vein occlusion(CRVO). Cases:This study was made on 72 eyes of 71 cases of CRVO who were followed up for 5 to 24 years, average 9.1 years. The series comprised 37 males and 34 females. The age ranged from 22 to 84 years, average 61 years. Results:Panretinal photocoagulation was performed on 67 eyes(93%),and vitreous surgery on 11 eyes(15%). During the follow-up,vitreous hemorrhage developed in 11 eyes(15%)after an average of 8.5 months and maximally 3 years 6 months. Neovascular glaucoma developed in 8 eyes(11%)after an average of 7.6 months and maximally 2 years. Three cases developed CRVO and 5 cases developed branch retinal vein occlusion in the fellow eye. Final visual acuity improved in 17 eyes(24%),remained unchanged in 14 eyes(19%),and deteriorated in 41 eyes(57%). Conclusion:The present cases show the need to pay particular attention to complications including vitreous hemorrhage and neovascular glaucoma for at least 4 years. The fellow eyes ought to be watched for a long period.
