Abstract. Purpose:To report clinical features of central retinal artery occlusion(CRAO). Cases:This retrospective study was made on a consecutive series of 41 cases of CRAO. Cases were followed up for one month to 20 years,average 40 months. Results:The series comprised 22 males and 19 females. The age ranged from 30 to 87 years,average 68 years. Thirty-four cases(83%)were aged 60 years or older. All were unilaterally affected. The right eye was affected in 27 cases and the left in 14 cases. Systemic hypertension was present in 26 cases,diabetes mellitus in 9 cases,and heart disease in 9 cases. Initial visual acuity was 0.1 or less in all the cases and was counting fingers or less in 24 cases(59%). Final visual acuity was between 0.5 and 1.2 in 7 cases(17%). Age of the 7 cases averaged 55 years. They were free of heart disease or ischemic cerebral diseases. Final visual acuity was counting fingers or less in 19 cases(46%). Final visual acuity was counting fingers or less in 15 out of 19 cases(79%)who were aged 70 years or over. Conclusion:Visual outcome of CRAO was poor in patients in advanced age and in those with systemic diseases.
