Abstract. Purpose:To report the outcome of long-term course of eyes after photocoagulation for retinal break. Cases and Method:This retrospective study was made on 113 eyes of 100 patients who were diagnosed with retinal break and were treated by argon laser photocoagulation. The series comprised 49 males and 51 females. The age ranged from 22 to 79 years, average 53 years. The 113 eyes were composed of 66 eyes with horseshoe tear and 51 eyes with retinal hole. All cases of retinal break received photocoagulation. Cases were followed up for 5 to 21 years, average 11 years. Results:New retinal break developed during follow-up. It occurred ipsilaterally in 14 cases(41%), contralaterally in 15 cases(44%), and bilaterally in 5 cases(15%). It was detected within one year of photocoagulation in 14 eyes(32%), from 1 to 5 years in 18 eyes(41%), and after 5 years in 12 eyes(27%). Retinal detachment developed in 2 eyes(1.8%)and epiretinal membrane in 4 eyes(3.5%). Conclusion:Prophylactic photocoagulation for retinal break resulted in good long-term outcome in the present series.
