Abstract. Purpose:To report a visually handicapped case who received inadequate initial counsel due to poor oral communication. Case:A male in the third decade of life was referred to us for retinal dystrophy. He had been conscious of night blindness. Both eyes had visual acuity of 1.2 with ring scotoma. He started receiving counseling every 2 months. Course:He was poorly communicative about his life initially. He started to actively talk 6 months after his initial visit. He told us about his future vocation and about anxiety over progression of his eye disease. Working together with him,we could set a goal for low-vision care and analyze problems of daily living. Conclusion:This case illustrates that visually handicapped person with poor ability of oral expression can get adequate counselling by establishing communication between patient and physician in the initial stage.
