Abstract. Purpose:To report characteristic features of second surgery for recurrence of exotropia. Cases and Method:This retrospective study was made on 16 cases who received recession/resection for intermittent exotropia. The age ranged from 4 to 11 years, average 6 years at the first surgery. It ranged from 6 to 13 years, average 9 years, at the second surgery. The amount of exotropia ranged from 18 to 35 prism diopters(Δ). Result:The amount of eye position by surgery averaged 3.2Δ per mm after the first surgery and 3.9Δ after the second. The difference was significant. Amount of recurrence of exotropia averaged 31.4Δ after the first surgery and 16.9Δ after the second. The difference was significant. Conclusion:In second surgery for recurrence of intermittent exotropia, recession/resection induces a larger amount of change in eye position and smaller amount of recurrence than the first. This feature merits due attention while planning a second surgery for recurrence of exotropia.
