Abstract. Purpose:To report the visual function and optical coherence tomographic findings after surgically reattached retina. Cases:This study was made on 3 eyes treated by vitreous surgery for rhegmatogenous retinal detachment. The series comprised 2 males and 1 female, aged 49, 52 and 63 years respectively. The fovea had been detached for at least 4 days, 2 weeks and 2 weeks with visual acuity of 0.05, 0.06 and 0.03 respectively. Results:All the eyes regained visual acuity of 1.2 after 4 to 15 months of follow-up. Optical coherence tomography(OCT)failed to show reflective line of junction between inner and outer photoreceptor segments in 2 eyes. This line became partially visible 3 weeks after surgery. This line was visible in the other eye when first examined by OCT 9 months after surgery. In all the 3 eyes, multifocal electroretinogram showed low-level response in the fovea soon after recovery of outer segment with restored visual acuity. Conclusion:Outer segment of photoreceptors remain degenerated and impaired foveal function persist during early postoperative period in retinal detachment.
