Abstract. Purpose:To report the outcome of photodynamic therapy for age-related macular degeneration(AMD)with low visual acuity. Cases:This retrospective study was made on 68 eyes of 68 patients with AMD They had visual acuity less than 0.1 and received photodynamic therapy in the past 2 years. The series comprised 54 eyes of AMD in its narrow sense and 14 eyes of polypoid choroidal vasculopathy(PCV). Results:The visual acuity averaged 0.037 before and 0.044 12 months after treatment. When improvement was defined as changes by 0.3 or more of logMAR visual acuity, it improved in 34% of eyes. It improved or remained unchanged in 66% of eyes. Improvement in visual acuity was better in eyes with PCV. Conclusion:Photodynamic therapy is effective for age-related macular degeneration(AMD)with visual acuity under 0.1.
