Purpose:To report the outcome of amniotic membrane transplantation for ocular surface diseases. Cases:This retrospective study comprised 71 eyes of 63 patients that received amniotic membrane transplantation during 7 years through 2004. The series comprised pterygium 33 eyes, corneal ulcer 13 eyes including 7 eyes of corneal perforation, corneal or conjunctival tumor 9 eyes, cicatricial keratoconjunctivitis 6 eyes, protracted corneal epithelial defect 3 eyes and other 7 eyes. Amniotic membrane was transplanted to promote epithelialization in 58 eyes and to fill corneal defect in 13 eyes. Results:The ocular surface became epithelialized in 54 out of 58 eyes(93%). Corneal defect disappeared in 9 out of 13 eyes(69%). The cornea reperforated in 2 out of 7 eyes. Infection due to amniotic membrane developed in 2 eyes. Conclusion:Amniotic membrane transplantation is useful for ocular surface diseases. Infection and corneal reperforation need due attention.
