Abstract. We evaluated the hypotensive effect of latanoprost monotherapy in 69 cases of untreated glaucomas. The series comprised 26 eyes of primary open-angle glaucoma(POAG)and 43 eyes of normal-tension glaucoma(NTG). Measurements were performed on one eye showing higher intraocular pressure(IOP)in each patient. In POAG,the baseline IOP averaged 22.6±3.6mmHg and the IOP after 3months of treatment averaged 15.8±2.8mmHg,with a reduction rate of 29%. In NTG,the baseline IOP averaged 16.4±2.5mmHg and the IOP after 3months of treatment averaged 12.3±2.1mmHg,with a reduction rate of 24%. IOP reduction by 30%or more was achieved in 18 eyes(69%)of POAG and in 25 eyes(58%)of NTG. The findings show that latanoprost may be effective for untreated POAG or NTG as the first choice.
