Abstract. We evaluated the hypotensive effect of topical timolol gel and latanoprost in 33 patients of normal-tension glaucoma. By single use of timolol, the intraocular pressure(IOP)decreased from 15.0±1.9 mmHg to 13.3±2.8 mmHg after 4 weeks(p<0.01). By single use of latanoprost, the IOP decreased from 15.9±1.9 mmHg to 13.2±2.2 mmHg 4 weeks later(p<0.01). When latanoprost was added to timolol, the IOP decreased from 13.3±2.8 mmHg to 11.1±2.5 mmHg(p<0.01). When timolol was added to latanoprost, the IOP decreased from 13.2±2.2 mmHg to 12.0±3.3 mmHg(p<0.05). The success rate of decreasing the IOP by 20% or 30% from the baseline was 20.0% and 15.0% by timolol and increased to 65.0% and 40.0% by dual instillation. The success rate was 38.5% and 7.7% by latanoprost and increased to 46.2% and 30.8%. The finding shows that significant hypotensive effect can be obtained by single use of timolol or latanoprost in normal-tension glaucoma. Dual instillation induces a greater hypotensive effect.
