We evaluated the analgesic effect of adhesive tape containing 60%lidocaine prior to retrobulbar anesthesia in 88 patients. We also evaluated the value of peroal 0.5mg etiozolam in alleviating pain during retrobulbar anesthesia. The patients were allocated to one of four groups. One group received lidocaine tape. Another group received lidocaine tape and etiozolam. A third group received etiozolam only. A fourth group served as control. Use of lidocaine tape significantly reduced pain during needle puncture(p<0.01)but not during injection. Premedication with etiozolam failed to reduce pain during needle puncture or injection. The findings show that lidocaine tape reduces pain of needle puncture for retrobulbar anesthesia.
