  • Look Inside

We performed vitreous surgery for vitreous hemorrhage secondary to age-related macular degeneration(AMD)in 8 eyes of 8 patients. All were males. Their ages averaged 72.3±8.6 years. The type of AMD was occult 3 eyes, unknown 4 eyes and polypoidal choroidal angiomatosis 1 eyes. Preoperative visual acuity ranged from light perception to 0.01. We performed simple vitrectomy in 1 eye and additional fluid-air exchange in 7 eyes. Three eyes also received irrigation of subretinal space. Postoperative complications included subretinal hemorrhage 1 eye, vitreous hemorrhage 2 eyes, and retinal detachment 2 eyes. Postoperative visual acuity ranged from hand motion to 0.4. It improved by 2 lines or more in 4 eyes and remained unchanged in 4. During vitreous surgery for AMD with vitreous hemorrhage and massive subretinal hemorrhage,we advocate irrigation of subretinal space with tissue plasminogen activator and silicone oil tamponade.
