  • Abstract
  • Look Inside

We reviewed the clinical features and outcomes of vitreous surgery for age-related maculardegeneration in 24 eyes. Vitreous hemorrhage was present in 19 eyes and subretinal hematoma alone in 5eyes. Simple vitrectomy was performed for vitreous hemorrhage and drainage of subretinal hematoma for5 eyes. Retinal detachment developed in 3 eyes with prior vitreous hemorrhage and incomplete posteriorvitreous detachment due to reopening of iatrogenic retinal breaks. Postsurgical visual acuity was favorablein eyes with subretinal hematoma when operated early. Poor visual acuity was the rule in protracted casesdue to difficulty in draining subretinal hematoma and to macular degeneration. We advocate early surgeryfor eyes with subretinal hematoma.
