Abstract. Purpose:To report the outcome of vitrectomy for vitreous hemorrhage in eyes of age-related macular degeneration(AMD). Cases and Method:This retrospective study was made on 14 eyes of 14 cases who received vitrectomy for vitreous hemorrhage as complication of AMD during the past 3 years. The series comprised 5 males and 9 females. The age ranged from 60 to 89 years, average 72 years. All the eyes received cataract surgery simultaneously. Cases were followed up for 2 to 24 months, average 11 months. Visual acuity was 0.2 in 2 eyes and 0.04 or less in the rest. Result:Final visual acuity was counting fingers or less in 6 eyes,0.01 to 0.1 in 5 eyes,0.4 to 0.5 in 2 eyes, and unknown in one eye. Final visual acuity improved by 2 lines or more in 6 eyes, remained unchanged in 4 eyes, deteriorated in 3 eyes, and was unknown in one eye. Conclusion:Vitrectomy for vitreous hemorrhage in eyes of AMD may result in improved visual acuity, although to a certain degree.
