Abstract. We reviewed the natural course of idiopathic choroidal neovascularization(ICNV)in 14 eyes of 14 patients. The series comprised 4males and 10 females. Their ages ranged from 23 to 48 years, average 31 years. ICNV was located either subfoveally or juxtafoveally. By admission criteria in the study, the visual acuity was 0.4 or over. The refraction ranged from-0.5D to-6.0D,average-4.3D. Patients were followed up for 12 to 37months,average 26months. Final visual acuity was 0.4 or better in 11 eyes and better than 1.0 in 7. When compared with the initial level,it was better in 1 eye, unchanged in 9,and worse in 4. Hemorrhage and exudation resolved in 10 eyes after an average of 13months,persisted in 4 eyes, and exacerbated in 3 eyes. Final visual acuity was independent of age, initial visual acuity, location, size or activity of ICNV. Final visual acuity was significantly worse in 3 patients aged 35 years or over than in the other 11 patients under 35 years(p=0.043). Above findings promise to be of value in the planning of therapeutic approaches.
