Abstract Purpose: To report one-year outcome of age-related macular degeneration(AMD)treated by intravitreal aflibercept. Particular attention was paid to subjective changes in quality of life(QOL)as related to the type of AMD and mode of treatment.

Cases and Method: This study was made on 61 cases of treatment-naïve AMD. The series comprised 41 males and 22 females. The age averaged 73.7 years. There were 22 cases of typical AMD and 39 cases of polypoidal choroidal vasculopathy. After three introductory sessions, randomly selected 33 cases were treated every 2 months and the other 28 cases were treated when needed(pro re nata:PRN). QOL was evaluated by questionnaire using NEI VFQ-25 before and one year after treatment.

Results: There was no change in subjectively evaluated QOL in cases of typical AMD. Cases of polypoidal choroidal vasculopathy showed improvements in total and score of QOL. The improvement was significantly greater in 2-month than PRN group regarding general visual status and health of mind.Improvement in QOL was more pronounced in 8 cases with poor vision in the fellow eye than in the other 53 cases.

Conclusion: There was no change in QOL in cases of typical AMD after one year of intravitreal aflibercept. QOL improved in cases of polypoidal choroidal vasculopathy, particular in those treated every 2 months.
