  • Look Inside

A 14-year-old boy noticed blurring of vision in his left eye. When seen the same day,his corrected visual acuity was 1.2 right and 0.08 left. He had had fever, pain and swelling of joints in both legs, and erythema on his face and legs since 3 days before. Funduscopy showed numerous cotton-wool patches in both eyes. The macular area in the left eye was nonperfused. He was diagnosed with systemic lupus erythematosus(SLE)by clinical and laboratory findings. Massive systemic corticosteroid induced improved systemic findings but no immediate changes in the fundus. Systemic treatment with reduced dosage resulted in remission of retinal vasculitis and formation of collaterals. The left visual acuity improved to 0.8 5months after onset. SLE in a young male is rare and may run a fulminent course. This patient ran a mild course probably because of negative antiphospholipid antibody and subacute type of erythema.
