We performed radial optic neurotomy for central retinal vein occlusion(CRVO)in 9 eyes of 9 patients. Their ages ranged from 43 to 79 years, average 63 years. The interval between onset and surgery ranged from 28 to 151 days, average 66 days. Cases were followed up for 6months or longer. Four eyes were ischemic and five were nonischemic type CRVO. Postoperative visual acuity, when evaluated as logMAR,showed a tendency to improve(p=0.051). The foveal thickness significantly improved(p=0.001). There was no difference between ischemic and nonischemic group regarding changes in visual acuity or foveal thickness. No postoperative changes were observed regarding arm-to-retina circulation time, retinal circulation time, retinal sensitivity,or critical flicker fusion frequency. Branch retinal artery occlusion developed in 2 eyes after surgery. The findings show that radial optic neurotomy may be more effective in improving visual acuity than other therapeutic modalities.
