Purpose:To report the outcome of penetrating keratoplasty(PKP)for bullous keratopathy. Cases:We reviewed 29 eyes that received PKP for bullous keratopathy in the past 52months. Age of patients ranged from 24 to 82 years, average 72 years. Age of donors ranged from 47 to 92 years, average 74 years. Bullous keratopathy was secondary to cataract surgery in 15 eyes(52%)and laser iridotomy 8 eyes(28%). Patients were followed up for 1 to 46months,average 18months. Results:Corneal graft remained transparent in 18 eyes(62%). Graft rejection and endothelial dysfunction were major causes for opaque cornea. Rate of transparency was low in eyes with glaucoma prior to PKP. As major complications, glaucoma developed in 6 eyes(21%),graft rejection in 4 eyes(21%),and endothelial dysfunction in 4 eyes(14%)after PKP. Conclusion:PKP for bullous keratopathy resulted in low rate of transparent cornea. Postoperative complications were major causes for failure.
