Purpose:To compare the macular thickness as measured by optical coherence tomography and by macular edema module of Heidelberg Retina Tomograph Ⅱ in the assessment of macular edema. Cases and Methods:This study involved 33 eyes with macular edema. The series comprised diabetic retinopathy 13 eyes,branch retinal vein occlusion 9 eyes,central retinal vein occlusion 1 eye,and epimacular membrane 10 eyes. Each eye was measured for retinal thickness within 1mm from the fovea by the two instruments. Results:Macular thickness averaged 449±150μm by optical coherence tomography. Edema index of the macula averaged 2.25±0.69 as arbitrary unit by Heidelberg Retina Tomograph. There was a positive correlation between the two values(r=0.47,p<0.01). Conclusion:Thickness of edematous macula can be evaluated by Heidelberg Retina Tomograph.
