Purpose:To report the drug sensitivity and patients' background of microorganisms isolated at the Department of Ophthalmology,Tottori University Hospital. Methods:A total of 142 strains were isolated during a 20-month period through 2004. They were evaluated as to the species, original diseases, sites, and drug sensitivity. Findings:Out of the 142 isolates,54 strains(38%)were Staphylococci, followed by 35 strains(25%)of Corynebacterium. Out of 44 strains of Staphylococcus aureus,33(75%)were methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus(MRSA). Out of 33 strains of MRSA,30(91%)were also resistant to levofloxacin. There was no specific background of patients regarding MRSA. Out of 35 strains of Corybacterium,20(57%)were resistant to levofloxacin. All strains of Neisseria gonorrhoeae were resistant to levofloxacin. Conclusion:There was a higher incidence of various microorganisms resistant to antibiotics than previously. Drug-resistance was more manifest against new quinolones.
