Abstract. Purpose:To report bacterial flora isolated from senile patients with conjunctivitis regarding species, duration of treatment, sensitivity and resistance to antibiotics. Cases and Method:This study was made on 160 eyes of 105 patients over 60 years of age who were diagnosed with bacterial conjunctivitis in the past 41 months and who were followed up for 24 weeks or longer. Results:A total of 151 bacterial strains were isolated. Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus and epidermididis were sensitive to chloramphenicol and vancomycin. Resistance or mixed infection was frequent in cases with history of treatment with quinolone. These cases were, in general, sensitive to tetracycline. The isolated strains as a whole were sensitive to chloramphenicol, cefmenoxicine and vancomycin, and were resistant to levofloxacin. Conclusion:Cefmenoxicine and chloramphenicol are recommended as the first choice of treatment for bacterial conjunctivitis in senile patients.
