  • Look Inside

We investigated the bacterial flora in the conjunctival sac of 265 eyes of patients scheduled for cataract surgery in two institutions during a 16-month period. One institution was located in Tokyo and the other in Yamaguchi Prefecture. Out of 158 eyes in Tokyo,120 eyes were positive for microorganisms. Out of 107 eyes in Yamaguchi,72 were positive. The stains totalled 130 and 103 respectively. There was no significant difference in the incidence of detection of microorganisms between two groups below and over 65 years of age. Corynebacterium was more prevalent in Tokyo and anaerobic Gram-positive rods were more prevalent in Yamaguchi. The findings show that the bacterial flora in the conjunctival sac may differ in different regions and environments. An on-site bacteriological check is desired to prevent postoperative complications.
