We developed an automated ultrasonic pulse emission system for cataract surgery. This system is designed to oscillate 50 times per second. Each pulse continues for 6ms. Whenever the foot-switch is pressed by 90%of the maximum value or over,or the vacuum for aspiration lasts for 1 second or longer at 80%of basic level, the pulse prolongs automatically to 14ms and the ultrasound duty increases from 30%to 70%. The power output of the system is set between 15%and 40%depending on the harness of lens nucleus. It is set at 40%for continuous oscillation. We performed cataract surgery on 43 eyes with this system. The following items were significantly less than with the conventional system:duration of surgery(p=0.02,paired-t test),sum of duration of ultrasound emission(p<0.0001),and total ultrasound energy(p<0.0001). The system was particularly useful in reducing the amount of ultrasound energy.
