  • Abstract
  • Look Inside

A right-handed woman, aged 63, showed a pathol-ogical grasping phenomenon of the lett hand as well as left hemiparesis and dyspractic symptome of the left upper extremity, following a cerebro-vascular incident.

The patient showed almost clear consciousness. This pathological grasping phenomenon was uni-lateral, and was characterized by difficulty with voluntary relaxation of the grasp, namely forced grasping. Besides the forced grasping (Zwangs-greifen), there was sometimes observed groping (Nachgreifen). The patient's left upper extremity showed a specific type of muscle tone described as tonic innervation, and an attempt to stretch the flexors met a striking reflex resistance. On the other hand, the dyspractic symptome of the same extremity was similar to motor apraxia (motorische Apraxie) or motor neglect of Casteigne (1970).

Duality and clinico-pathological significance of the pathological grasping phenomena were con-sidered, and their relation to dyspraxia was dis-cussed.
