  • Abstract
  • Look Inside

BCNU (1, 3-Bis (2-chloroethyl)-1-nitrosourea ; NSC-409962), an active drug with pharmachologic pro-perties inhibiting the DNA-synthesis and permit-ting it to pass the Blood-Brain barrier, was given to 15 patients who had primary or secondary ma-lignant brain tumors. Most tumors had recurredafter conventional surgical treatment, irradiation and chemotherapy.

Patints were treated with BCNU 100 mg/m2 for 3 times intravenously. No serious complication was encountered. Objective response was noted in 10 of 15 patients, including 5 of 8 glioblastomas, 3 of 4 low-grade gliomas, pineoblastoma and malignant hemangiopericytoma.

Although the duration of remission was limited between 1 week and 6 months and the survival period was not prolonged, we could say that BCNU is a more effective agent at least for recurrent brain tumors than other antitumor agents.
