  • Abstract
  • Look Inside

There have been some reports indicating that angios-pasm may occur in the cerebral or neck vessels and cause brain disorder. However, none of them has observed the spasm under direct surgical observation. Recently, we identified surgically four patients as the anglospasm of the internal carotid artery in the neck.

The patients had various complaints suggesting brain disorders.

In all cases, there were closed head and/or neck injuries in their past histories. Angiopraphic examina-tion revealed non-filling or narrowing of the internal carotid artery which commonly occur at point about two cm distal from the carotid bifurcation.

After surgical treatment using our carotid dilatation method, the complaints were improved in parallel with angiographic disappearance of the narrowing.

This may suggest that the angiospasm occurs in the internal carotid artery in the neck, and I thought that the internal carotid spasm in the neck would cause. eventually some types of organic carotid occlusion.
