  • Look Inside

It is the main purpose of this paper to present an etiology and a mechanism of incidence of idiopathic facial paralysis with 72 cases using mainly serological tests etc.

The results are as follows ;

1) Sixteen out of 72 cases (22.2%) had the cold and 9 out of 72 cases (12.5%) had the history of ex-posure to chill before the onset. There are also 4 cases who had the history of rheumatoid arthritis. It was found that 43 out of 72 cases (59.7%) had no etiology for this disease.

2) Serological tests ; ASLO, RA and CRP were carri-ed out in the all cases. Significant titres of ASLO (166 units or more) were obtained in 24 out of 72 cases (33.3%).

There were 10 of RA positive cases and one RA false positive case and then 2 of CRP positive cases and one CRP false positive case in 72 cases.

Furthermore, 33 out of 72 cases (45.8%) had one or two pathological reactions for serological tests but the remaining 39 cases (54.2%) had normal reaction. There are however not only one case who had 3 pathological reactions for 3 tests in 72 cases.

3) Fifty-one cases were examinated to the sedimenta-tion rate of R. B. C. and 13 cases (25.5%) had the increased sedimentation rate.

4) Forty-eight cases were examinated to the white cell count and 18 cases (37.5%) had leukocytosis.

5) From the results obtained, the importance of in-flammation in the etiology was considered and the suggestion made for a possible infectious etiology.
