  • Abstract
  • Look Inside

A number of local anesthesic agents have been used to block the stellate ganglia. We have used 10ml of 1% Novocaine, Xylocaine and Carbocain for this procedure in order to compare the onset and duration of Homer's syndrome and the sense of heat in the face and upper extremities caused by each agent.

Carbocain has been shown to have advan-tages over the other two agents in that Hor-ner's syndrome appeared before the with-drawal of the needle and the duration of the effects was also about twice as long when using the latter. There have been no unto-ward side effects attributable to Carbocaine. There was no appreciable difference in effe-ct between Xylocaine and Novocaine.

It seems, therefore, that the clinical value of stellate ganglion block may be increased by the use of Carvocain.
