  • Look Inside

The sacral nerve cyst is a new nosologic concept which is first described by Tarlov in 1938, who found 5 instances of cysts atta-ched to the posterior sacral and coccygeal nerves in a study of the filum terminale in 30 autopsies. In 1948 Tarlov reported a case of sciatic pain due to a perineurial cyst, which was removed with relief of. sympto-ms.

Since then, several reports have been made describing the sign and symptoms, neurolo-gical findings, roentgenographic diagnosis and cause and origin of the cysts, although many problems are not yet solved satisfac-torily.

Recently, two cases of this disease have been found in our clinic, and are reported here in detail.

The first case, a 29 year-old female, was admitted to the hospital with the chief com-plaints of dull pains with sensation of swel-ling of the right foot. Myelography demons-trated bilateral sacral cysts. The patient had operation-incision of right cyst and she became completely free from pain.

The second case, 44 year-old male, entered the hospital because of hypalgesia, warm hypaesthesia and numbness of the right foot, and myelography suggested the cyst of sac-ral nerve root.
