Electroencephalographic and clinical respon ses to cardiazol (pentamethylentetrazol) were studied in 57 epileptic patients for the purpose of determining the threshold value of cardia-zol-activation. Subjects were diagnosed as generalized seizure or grand mal type and showed normal or subnormal EEG in routine records. 10% cardiazol solution was adminis-trated intravenously at the rate of 100mg per minute. Results are summarized as follows:

With 200mg administration of cardiazol, abnormal EEG were detected in 32 cases out of 57 epileptic patients (56%) and spikes were detected in 11 cases (28%). With 300mg., abnormal EEG were 41 cases (72%), spikes were 18 cases (31%). Clinical convulsive seizures were induced in 34 cases out of 57 cases examined (59%) with 500mg.

Mathematical differences between the amounts of cardiazol required to detected abnormal EEG and the amounts to induce clinical seizures are as follows: 0mg (viz. seizures were induced immediately or shortly after the abnormal EEG seen) 11 cases; 100mg, 8 cases; 200mg, 9 cases.
