  • Abstract
  • Look Inside

Although classical 3c/s wave-spike in clini-cal electroencephalography has been general-ly accepted as a clear sign of petit mal epile-psy, it becomes recently to be acknowledged that there are some varieties of spike-wave pattern, i. e. atypical spike-wave, seen not in true petit mal but in other types of clinical seizures.

After trying to note on a strict definition of the typical wave-spike of petit mal in res-pect to the frequency, wave pattern, bilate-rality, synchronicity and so on, the authors described on their own observation of atypi-cal spike-wave seen in various epileptic sei-zures, including a those with diffuse cortical or parasagittal lesions.

However, with sufficient dose of intrave-nously injected Metrazol, a sort of atypical spike-wave could be evoked also in the EEGs of normal controls and psychotics such as schizophrenia and manic depressive psychoses. So it should be emphasized that such an aty pical spike-wave might show an electrophy-siological significance of "Epilepsie-Bereits-chaft."
