  • Look Inside

1. Two cases with addition of of non-barbitu-rate hypnotic l-aethynyl cyclohexyl carbamate (Valanum, Schering) were reported, which have developed chronic toxic physical symp-toms and showed severe withdrawal symp-toms of delirious state.

2. The toxic symptoms were profuse pers-piration, flow of tears, loss of appetite, vomitting, chilliness, dry mouth, emaciation, tremor, motor ataxia, speech disturbance, etc.

These are similar to the physical symptoms of chronic morphinism.

3. The withdrawal symptoms were anxiety, disturbance of consciousness, disorientation, illusions, hallucinations, motor restlessness, etc. The second case was accompanied with convulsive seizures. Following this delirious state the first case shifted to a hallucinatory delusory state and left personality change after this. These symptoms closely resemb-led those of delirium tremens.

4. It has been known that non-barbiturates can be used for a long time without the ill effect of habituation, accumulation and ana-phylactic reaction. There has been no report so far on the withdrawal symptoms of non-barbiturates.
