3) When petit mal wave appeared in all parts of the scalp with high voltage, the subject suffered from severe disturbance of consciousness, while the seizure pattern of lower voltage with partial distribution tended to be accompanied by slight or no changes of consciousness.

4) From the findings mentioned above, thecorrelation of EEG and the state of consci-ousness was discussed. The disturbance of consciousness is not remarkable when electro-encephalographic change is localized in the circumscribed areas of the brain and becomes manifest when the change of EEG spread to the whole brain. The fact that a case of hepatocerebral degeneration which had clinical symptoms of decerebration and which in autopsy revealed severe atrophy of the cerebral cortex with relative preservation of the subcortical nuclei showed alpha waves, might also confirm the role played by the subcortico-cortical mechanism in the occur-rence of disturbance or turbidity of conscious-ness.
