  • Look Inside

Chemical changes occured in the sensory-motor cortex, when the brachial plexus on the opposite side is stimulated with an alternating current of 60 cycles for 10 sec. on more. To demonstrate these changes, the corresponding cortical area on the other side is frozen 2-3 sec.before the onset of simulation, to serve as a control. After stimulation for 30 second the following chemical changes can be demon-strated in the stimulated cortex: the non protein nitrogen of the acid soluble fraction increase by about 20.0mg%, while the soluble amino-nitrogen decrease by about 10.5mg%, lipid-nitrogen decrease by about 17.3mg%, while the amino-nitrogen of the lipids in-crease by about 9.4mg%. Nucleic acid-nitrogen decrease by 12.8mg%, while the amino-nitrogen of the nucleic acids shows an increase by about 7.3mg%. All these changes are reversible within 10min. or sooner.

The magnitude of these chemical changes is propositional to the number of stimuli given. Maximal changes were obtained by stimulation for 40 sec. with 60 cycles a.c. These findings indicate that, during stimula-tion of the cortex, nitrogenous substances are split off from the lipids and from the nucleo-proteins.
