1)緒言
1927年Heymans氏は頸動脈小體がChemo-receptorとして呼吸を調節する重要なる器官である事を發見し,更にSchmidt氏及びその共同者等によりその感受する主なる刺戟は,CO2よりも(CO2は呼吸中枢を刺戟す) oxygen lackである事が鮮明された。
これが現今知られている所の頸動脈小體の唯一の生理的機能である。併し之等の研究はHeyma-ns父子を始め,從來何れも動物實驗について行われたもので,臨床的に此れを實證せる者は未だ之を見ない。我々は偶々頸動脈小體摘出の生體に及ほす影響を研究中,同小體摘出が呼吸停止時間を異常に延長せしめる事を發見し,これが即ちHeymans氏現象を人體に於て最も簡單に臨床的に實證したものと信ずるので,此所に報告し合せて本現象が人體に於ける本小體生理の研究上重要なる指標となり得る事を強調するものである。
1. According to our estimation about the time of stopping drawing breath after deep inspiration and normal expiration are cons-tant in normal people, and the results are as follows:

But in the case of asthmatic patient both of them are shortened.
2. When the function of the carotid body ceased owing to some operations such as the removal of the carotid body, the amputation of the artery to the carotid body or an alc- ohol injection into the carotid bo y, the time of the stopping drawing breath are prolonged in the most cases.
3. This abnormal phenomenon is not due to the improvement of the anoxia-condition, but because of the lack of function of the caro- tid body which acts as a chemoreceptor.
4. A release feeling of the chest of asthma- tic patient after the removal of the carotid body seems due to, the expansion of the enduring sphere of asphyxiation.
5. In case of the already known factors which concern the time of stopping drawing breath are not to be found, this test should be the clinical test of the function of the carotid body.
