The survey assessed the current status of mental health, particularly suicidal ideation, in Japanese teenagers. The Japanese versions of the Profile of Mood States-Brief Form and the General Health Questionnaire 30 were distributed to 220 school children living in the rural area of Ehime, Japan. Data were collected from all students (response rate:100%), and subsequently analyzed. Overall, the prevalence of mental problems, especially depressive problems, was significantly higher in girls who were in the second and third grade of junior high school. Suicidal ideation was observed in 9.5% of students (n=21:9 boys, 12 girls). The accurate detection of suicidal ideation and the establishment of a mental health support system are vital to the prevention of suicide in teenagers.
